Bogotá, also known as Santa Fé de Bogotá, was discovered in 1538 by the conquistadores and named by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. This was a time in the Holy Catholic Church where all were persecuted if not of the Faith, so the Chibcha Indian tribal center, Bacatá was taken over and named New Granada, which later became Colombia.
